Locally-Caught Crab

Whole hen crab, cleaned and cooked after being landed by The Becci of Ladram, one of our own boats. Cracking a whole crab may be something of a labour of love, but the delicious brown and white meat is a reward well worth waiting for!

Origins: Our fishing vessels work out of Exmouth, Brixham and Newlyn, and operate in accordance with the Seafood Responsible Fishing Scheme. They keep us well topped up most days with a selection of fresh fish and shellfish, and a catch can often be on its way to the Greendale farm shop within hours of leaving the sea. If we can’t catch it ourselves, we source only from trusted suppliers with standards as high as our own. The fish available may vary, depending on the season, but a delicious variety is always to be found on our fish counter. From whole fish to fillets, live lobsters to shrimp, our wide selection is sold in a choice of portion sizes and prepared for your convenience by our skilled fishmongers.

Fishmonger's Tips: Hen crabs may be smaller than the male (cock) crabs, but what they lack in size they make up for in quality and flavour. The hen crabs have smaller claws, so have less white meat, but the brown meat they contain is sweet and makes for superb eating.

How to Cook: This ready-cooked crab meat is ready to use, in delicious salads, sandwiches, crabcakes, soups and more. See our 'Inspiration' section for ideas.
